Nassella tenuissima

Common Names: Mexican feather grass

Plant Form: Perennial tussock grass. Size: Up to 70 cm tall. Stem: Long, narrow, form thick tussocks. With a small sheath covering the base of the leaf join. Leaves: Up to 60 cm long, tightly rolled, overlapping at edges, smooth rolled between fingers but rough when sliding fingers downwards. Flowers: Clustered in group 15-25 cm long at the end of a spike. Drooping. Fruit and Seeds: Purplish-brown or green. Clustered in groups at the end of the spike. With leaf-like sheath which makes them hard to pull of plant. With 4.5-9 cm long awns. Habitat: Old gardens, pastures, grasslands, woodlands. Distinguishing Features: Similar to Serrated tussock (Nassella trichotoma) but has longer leaves and a narrower seed, with much longer awns.
