Common Names: Texas needlegrass

Plant Form: Perennial tussock grass. Size: Up to 1.5 m tall. Stem: Erect, producing leaves at nodes. Leaves: Blades 30 cm long, smooth, hairless or with sparse covering of soft hairs, flat or somewhat in-rolled. With small flap over where joins with stem. Flowers: Contracted head up to 25 cm long. With many spikelets surrounded by bracts up to 1.5 cm long, which are straw coloured or translucent. Fruit and Seeds: Sharp pointed 6-9 mm long pale brown to purple with wart-like growths. With twice-bent awns 3.5-6 cm long. Habitat: Pastures, grasslands, open woodlands. Distinguishing Features: Difficult to distinguish from other exotic Needlegrasses (Nassella species) but can be distinguished from native spear grasses (Austrostipa and Poa species) by crown-like structure below seed awns.
