Common Names: Cane needlegrass
Plant Form: Perennial tussock grass. Size: Up to 1.5 m tall. Stem: Occasionally branched, and with nodes which are smooth and hairless. Leaves: Blades up to 20 cm long, flat or in-rolled, ribbed texture and rough edges. With a small flap rolled around the stem where they join. Flowers: Branching heads 25 cm long with many spikelets contained within. With bracts up to 1.2 cm long surrounding individual flowers. Straw coloured with pointed tips. Fruit and Seeds: Pale brown to purple and with wart-like growths. Have a long awn about 4 cm long. With crown-like structure between seed and awn. Habitat: Degraded land, grasslands, woodlands, pastures. Distinguishing Features: Difficult to distinguish from other exotic Needlegrasses (Nassella species) but can be distinguished from native spear grasses (Austrostipa and Poa species) by crown-like structure below seed awns.
