Nassella charruana

Common Names: Lobed needlegrass

Plant Form: Perennial tussock grass. Size: Up to 1 m tall. Stem: Narrow, long. Densely packed forming a tussock. Leaves: Narrow, rough textured blades that are rolled-inward, and up to 60 cm long. Flowers: Shiny branching heads up to 30 cm long. Spikelets within have white or straw coloured bracts up to 1.8 cm long. Fruit and Seeds: 5-7.5 mm long and with very long 4.5-9 cm long awns attached to a crown-like structure. Habitat: Roadsides, degraded land, grasslands, open woodlands, pastures. Distinguishing Features: Difficult to distinguish from other exotic Needlegrasses (Nassella species) but can be distinguished from native spear grasses (Austrostipa and Poa species) by crown-like structure below seed awns.
