Sporobolus natalensis

Common Names: Giant rat’s tail trass

Plant Form: Upright tussock forming perennial grass. Size: Up to 1.5 m tall. Stem: Long, upright, clump together to form tussock. Leaves: Very long, narrow blades, 20-70 cm long. Flat or somewhat rolled. Flowers: Elongated rats tail-like heads 20-30 cm long. Fruit and Seeds: Dark green or greyish-green spikelets containing 2 bracts with numerous yellowish-brown seeds. Habitat: Disturbed areas, roadsides, woodlands, urban bushland, parks. Distinguishing Features: Very similar to other introduced Rats-tail grasses (Sporobolus species) so expert advice is recommended, however spike-shaped rather than pyramid-shaped head may help distinguish it from Sporobolus pyramidalis (also known as Giant rats-tail grass).
